femmanism

My name is Emma. This is my feminism.

About

I remember when I took my first women’s studies course two years ago.  It was my first year of university, and I was ready to take in all the knowledge they could give me.  I was excited to finally be learning things that were relevant to my life.

But I didn’t account for how uncomfortable and inexplicably angry and upset it would make me.  School had never forced me to examine my personal beliefs the way this course did. All at once, I was expected to recognize how harmful many of my beliefs were, and to get angry about it.  I was then told that there were no easy answers to these problems.

I resisted much of what I learned in that class at the time, but I have finally begun to feel comfortable with the label of ‘feminist’ and have internalized the issues I had previously rejected.

My goal for myself is to find meaningful ways to insert feminism into my everyday life.  Media is one of the most important influences on ideas about gender and sexuality, at least for me, so I think it’s really important to be able to consume it critically, and through a feminist lens.

Being a feminist media consumer does not mean I only consume feminist media; it means I consume all media as a feminist.

This site is all about my expression of feminism.  My name is Emma, hence, ‘femmanism.’

Please let me know if there are any documentaries (especially dealing with gender in the media) that I should watch.   🙂

    Hi Emma,
My name is Natasha and I am currently looking for some feminist perspectives for a project I am working on. I love the angle you have on topics and I would like to ask you a few questions if you don’t mind. Please email me back at natasha.kennedy@hotmail.com so we can further discuss your interest. Love the blog, and I hope to hear from you soon 🙂
